2004 Team Tennis Results

WACTA 2004 Team Tennis was a successful tournament. After more than four hours of competition, Team Shelley came from behind and won the gold medal. The team is to keep the trophy one more year. Team Mindy, the silver medal winner, lost by just one point. Team Wesley was bronze winner. Captain Wesley and his massage classmate provided free massage to members. Many ladies took advantage of the service and enjoyed it very much. Team Chia-Chou didn't win a medal; nevertheless, team members were a bunch of happy campers. They enjoyed ice cold "team drink" before match and cheese cake after match. What can you ask more to build a team spirit?
Thanks to Mr. Steven Ding and Evergreen Properties and Settlements for their generous support. Here are photos.

style="mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt"> More than half of
campers took tennis clinic. They really enjoyed the classes and learned new
skills, tricks and strategies from coaches. Annual outlet mall shopping group
was formed quickly. It took two minivans to haul ladies’ purchases. Shelley even
organized an evening fashion show for ladies only.

style="mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt">Several campers also
took excursions to local golf court. We propose to include a golf tournament as

WACTA 2004 Jimmy Shaw Women's Doubles - sponsored by Dr. Robert Chu
WACTA has dedicated the 2004 Women's Doubles Tournament to the fond
memory of long-time WACTA sponsor and great friend, Jimmy Shaw. The
tournament was successfully completed on February 28 at the Four Seasons
Tennis Club.
This dedication was made possible by the generous sponsorship of Dr.
Robert Chu, a well-known ophthalmologist in the Washington area.
In the award ceremony, Dr. Chu indicated that he has participated in the
Shaw and Shaw Tennis Ladder, which was sponsored by Jimmy Shaw, many
times in the past, and has greatly enjoyed what the Ladder has provided
for WACTA members. Dr. Chu lauded Jimmy's passion for and generosity
towards the game.
President Shing-Bong expressed that he was very touched by Dr. Chu's
generosity. This Women's Doubles tournament has provided a forum for
WACTA members to memorialize Jimmy and to participate in the sport that
Jimmy loved most.
Elaine Shaw and her mother, accompanied by friends, came to see the
tournament and were warmly greeted by our members.
The tournament was sold to capacity - another outstanding event! This
tournament marked the last event organized by the 2003-2004 WACTA
administration. By all measures, including players' competition level
and spectators' excitement, it may have been the most successful event
in our term. On that note, we bid farewell to all of you and wish you
the best in everything you do.
Below are the playoff detail result and event

WACTA 2004 Election and Annual Banquet
On Saturday, February 21, at New Fortune restaurant, over 210 members got
together to celebrate the advancement of WACTA into another new year. This year
was our 13th Anniversary! We are proud to be such a remarkable organization in
both size and influence in the Washington area, with family members totaling
over 930 and individual members surpassing 460, in addition to new members
joining at every new tournament.

This year, the banquet was co-hosted by Shih-Chun Lien, Wesley Wang, and Shelley
Xu, and there was no shortage of fun and excitement, with activities ranging
from a karaoke singing performance to raffle ticket drawings to dancing.
Please enjoy the photos.  Awards
were also presented to the sponsors, staff, and board of directors for their
contributions.

The most important activity conducted during the night was the election of the
new board of directors and president. Our newly elected president is Shing-Bong
Chen, and the new board of directors is as follows: Mindy Cheng, Chia-Chou
Chang, Jack Lin, Kan Chang, Chin-Ho Lien, S.L. Hung, and Shing-Bong Chen.
Congratulations to all!

We, the outgoing staff and board of directors, are deeply grateful for the
support from all of you in this year's events. We hope you will continue this
same enthusiasm for tennis and support of WACTA events in the upcoming year.

To assist you in planning early for this year's coming events, the following are
a few upcoming dates. Details will be announced later.

. Spring Social Tennis, April 10, 2004

. Junior and Senior Doubles, April 17, 2004

. Summer Camp, June 24-27, 2004 at Salisbury University

Remembering
Jimmy
WACTA has recently learned that our beloved friend and generous sponsor, Jimmy
Shaw, has passed away on 1/21/04. Jimmy was killed in a Jet Ski accident in
Mexico while on vacation with his wife Elaine, their two kids, and other family
friends.

Jimmy had provided great support for WACTA via the Shaw & Shaw Tournament, a
summer long tennis ladder that has been extremely popular among our members.
For many years, this tennis ladder has provided WACTA members with a venue to
compete fiercely and treasure the camaraderie built from this enjoyable
tournament. Jimmy will be forever remembered by all of us for his passion to
help and his generosity towards others, including WACTA.

A memorial service will be held on 2/01/04, Sunday, 10:00 AM, at Hines-Rinaldi

Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20904 Tel:
301-622-2290. The funeral rite committee has informed WACTA that, shall you
wish to donate to Jimmy's children's education fund, please make your check out
to Elaine Shaw. Any flower or wreath will, however, be gratefully declined. Many
of Jimmy's friends have contributed to the following website, which provides
further details. mywebpages.comcast.net/jimmyshaw2
